The Ministry of Education has made important amendments to the list of holidays for the academic year 2026 for secondary and higher education institutions in the country. A new notification has been issued changing the previously scheduled holiday dates on the occasion of the holy Fateha-e-Yazdaham. This notification, published by the Secondary and Higher Education Department (SHED) of the Ministry of Education, has resulted in partial changes in the previously scheduled academic year calendar.
The notification clearly states that in view of the decision of the Islamic Foundation, the holiday notification issued on May 20, 2026, has been partially revised. According to the new notification, the date of the holy Fateha-e-Yazdaham has been revised in the list of holidays for the 2026 academic year and has been fixed as September 23, 2026 .
Why did the holiday date change?
In the previously announced list of government holidays, a holiday was scheduled for September 24 on the occasion of the holy Fateha-e-Yazdaham . However, this religious holiday is mainly determined based on the sighting of the moon. After the Islamic Foundation’s moon sighting news and the decision of the National Moon Sighting Committee, it became necessary to reschedule the date of this religious holiday for the academic year.
In continuation of this, the Ministry of Education has amended the previous directive and declared September 23 as an effective holiday. As a result, a one-day holiday will be observed on that day in all government and private secondary schools, higher secondary colleges and related educational institutions in the country.
Rescheduling of class 11th starting date
The change in the Fateha-e-Yazdaham holiday has affected the newly admitted students of Class 11 / XI for the academic year 2026-27. As per the previously announced schedule, classes for Class 11 students admitted online were supposed to start from September 23. However, due to a one-day general holiday across the country on that day on the occasion of Fateha-e-Yazdaham, the next stage of the admission process, i.e. orientation and regular class commencement date, has been postponed by one day.
The Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee confirmed this decision through a notification. According to the new decision, classes for new students of class XI will officially start from September 24, 2026 .

It is very important that educational institutions, students and parents are informed about such immediate notifications and changes in the holiday list related to education in a timely manner. According to the changed dates, students admitted to class XI will be able to attend their respective colleges from September 24 and start their classes for the academic year.
This information has been compiled directly in light of the official notifications and circulars of the Secondary and Higher Education Division of the Ministry of Education and the Bangladesh Inter-Education Board Coordination Committee.
